When you’re facing a big decision, doubt is loud and wisdom is quiet. Tara Allen shares how to tell the difference and choose the voice that leads you forward.
I first heard the phrase “Doubt shouts. Wisdom whispers.” from one of my longtime coaches, Jordan Freed, and it has stuck with me ever since.
Because we all know that loud voice:
You can't do that. You're not ready. What if you fail?
Doubt is LOUD.
But then there's another voice, usually much quieter:
You can do this. You know what you need to do. Take the next step. Trust yourself.
Which voice are you going to listen to?
Because being loud doesn't make doubt right.
Fear and doubt can convince us to stay comfortable, overthink, ask everyone else's opinion, or wait until we feel completely certain.
Meanwhile, somewhere underneath all that noise, we often already know.
Fear and doubt aren't necessarily bad
Of course you're going to feel fear when you're taking a leap, doing something you've never done, or stepping outside your comfort zone. I think fear & doubt just means you are doing something meaningful and all you need is courage to take the next step forward.
What is wisdom whispering?
So if you're wrestling with something right now, ask yourself: What is doubt shouting at me?
Then get quiet. What is wisdom whispering?
You might already know the answer.
You just have to decide which voice gets the final say.
To your best life,
Tara
