If It's To Be, It's Up to Me

Ownership is hard — but it's also where the best parts of life are built. A reflection on personal responsibility, doing hard things, and what training for a marathon taught me about becoming someone you're proud of.

This belief sounds simple, but it's one of the most challenging because ownership is hard.

It means we actually have to do the hard things. And what I can tell you is this: personal responsibility, doing the hard things, and the moments when you take extreme ownership... Those end up being the best times. The times when you make yourself the most proud.

You're focused. You're dialed in. You're clear on the mission and why it matters.

No matter what

  • It doesn't matter what comes up, you figure it out.
  • It doesn't matter if you're tired, you keep going.
  • It doesn't matter if you feel like it, you've already decided.

You're going to get it done. No matter what. That's what I'm talking about.

And the truth is... so few people actually commit and go all in. Why?

Because it's freaking HARD

It's easier to blame. Easier to justify. Easier to make excuses.

Easier to point at circumstances, people, timing, basically anything but yourself.

But here's the truth: It may not be your fault and there will be obstacles & setbacks... but it is your responsibility.

The things I'm most proud of in my life didn't happen by accident. They came from relentless ownership. From doing the work when no one was watching and showing up on the days I didn't feel like it.

Training for a marathon, no one can do that for you. Hitting a big goal, no one hands that to you.

It's built in the daily small actions, the quiet decisions.

The moments where no one would know if you didn't follow through... but you did anyway.

The marathon

One of the best examples of this in my life was when I committed to running a marathon... without ever having run more than a 5K. No one could do that for me.

There were early mornings I didn't feel like it. Long runs that tested me mentally and physically. Days I questioned if I could even finish. But I kept showing up.

And when I finally crossed the finish line, I had a realization... It wasn't the finish line that made it meaningful. It was the work I put in.

It was the discipline of doing what I said I would do. It was the moments I didn't feel like it... and did it anyway. It was the relationships I built along the way. It was who I became in the process.

That's what made it so rewarding. And that's the part people miss.

Doing hard things isn't just about the result... It's about the growth, the confidence, and the identity you build along the way. And yes... the 'up to me' part can feel lonely at times.

But it's also the most powerful thing you can do for yourself. The idea that the world owes you something? That you deserve a result because of your past, your circumstances, or your intentions? That's not a strategy. Ownership is.

Show up. Do the work. Even when you don't feel like it, because something powerful happens when you do.

Your energy shifts. Your confidence grows. You start to realize, you're capable of more than you thought.

And happiness? It doesn't come from getting everything you want, it comes from progress. From earning it, from becoming someone you're proud of.

Because at the end of the day... The life you want, the results you want, the relationships you want... They're waiting on you.

Always remember: if it's to be... it's up to me.

Ask yourself

  • Where am I waiting on something instead of owning it?
  • What would change if I took full responsibility for my results?

Your Friend, Tara
