Faith gives you strength. Belief gives you courage. But perspective gives you wisdom. A reflection on how the lens you choose can change everything about where you're headed.

This month I've been sharing a series of beliefs that have shaped my life.

First was Everything is Figureoutable. Then it was Faith Will Get You Through. And now comes the next piece: Perspective.

Because faith gives you strength. Belief gives you courage. But perspective gives you wisdom.

The truth is, many people spend more time looking through the rearview mirror than the big windshield right in front of them.

They replay old pain. They relive old mistakes. They let yesterday control tomorrow.

They carry stories like:

  • I'm damaged because of what happened.
  • This is just how life goes for me.
  • People like me never get ahead.
  • My past defines my future.

And those stories become the lens they see life through.

There's an old story about two brothers who grew up in the same home.

Their father was an alcoholic. He struggled with addiction. Their childhood was unstable, painful, and chaotic.

Years later, both brothers were interviewed about how their lives turned out.

One brother became a successful businessman, a loving husband, and a great father.

The other brother spent years in and out of jail and battled addiction himself.

Both were asked the same question: "How did you end up where you are today?"

And both gave the same answer: "I had no choice. My dad was an addict."

Same childhood. Same pain.

Same circumstances. But two completely different lenses.

One used the past as an excuse. The other used the past as fuel.

One saw pain as permission to stay stuck. The other saw pain as motivation to rise.

One repeated the pattern. The other broke the pattern.

That's the power of perspective.

Sometimes we think our circumstances determine our future. They don't.

What often determines our future is the meaning we attach to those circumstances.

The lens matters

If your lens is dirty with resentment, blame, fear, and limitation... life will look small and heavy.

If your lens is clear with growth, responsibility, gratitude, and possibility... life opens up.

This doesn't mean pain isn't real. It doesn't mean hardship is easy. It means you still get a say in what it means.

You don't have to wait for tragedy to wake up. You can choose right now to ask:

  • Is this story helping me or hurting me?
  • Am I using my past as an anchor or as fuel?
  • Is there another way to see this?
  • What lesson can I take from this pain?

Perspective doesn't always change the circumstance... but it can completely change your life.

Sometimes the thing holding you back isn't what happened to you. It's the meaning you've given it.

Choose a better lens. Choose growth. Choose ownership. Choose possibility.

Because the moment your perspective changes... your future can too.

Reflection Questions

  • Where am I allowing my past to limit my future?
  • How could I use my hardest experiences as fuel instead of excuses?

PS: I had a very rocky start to life, including maybe a jail cell here or there. I could be in a very different place right now, but I gained perspective and did the inside work.

You may not control how your story started... but you absolutely get a say in how it continues.

Tara Allen
